All You Need To Know About Psychologists

Blog

Most people think about therapy when they hear the term psychologist. These professionals study the mind and behaviour to solve mental problems. This post provides critical insights into the psychology profession.

What Do Psychologists Do?

Psychology as a scientific study explores how the human mind functions, including how thought patterns affect behaviour in different contexts. Psychologists use their knowledge in psychology to solve social problems such as managing mental health conditions. Also, the term psychologist can refer to a social scientist working in a college setup specializing in the psychology discipline.

A psychologist is different from a psychiatrist. Essentially, a psychiatrist focuses on the biological causes, diagnoses, prevention options and treatments for mental illness. In comparison, a psychologist explores the social, cultural, and environmental factors that affect behaviour and emotional health. Usually, psychologists rely on therapy to treat mental health symptoms rather than medication.

What Are the Qualifications of a Psychologist?

The Australian Psychological Accreditation Council approves and accredits all courses for psychologists. A person wishing to become a psychologist must complete multiple years of undergraduate studies in psychology. Then, the students complete a postgraduate degree or supervised internship to get general registration as a psychologist. They can also pursue a master's or doctorate in psychology.

Psychologists can specialize in clinical psychology, forensic psychology, health psychology, community psychology, counselling psychology, clinical neuropsychology and sports psychology. Also, psychologists can join professional bodies such as the Australian Psychological Society (APS).

What Can a Psychologist Do for You?

Psychologists diagnose and treat mental health symptoms using therapy. Thus, you can see a psychologist if you suffer from depression, anxiety, drug addiction, strained relationships or obsession/compulsion disorders. In practice, the professionals provide guidance and emotional support to understand mental health symptoms and teach you coping skills. Psychologists use several approaches to support clients, including cognitive behavioural therapy, humanistic psychology, psychodynamic therapy and art or play therapy.

Where Can You Find a Psychologist?

Psychologists work in varied settings depending on their tasks. The majority of them work in a medical environment. Thus, you can find a psychologist in a hospital, health clinic, or psychiatric institution. Counselling psychologists operate a private practice in their offices or schools and community centres. A psychologist may choose to pursue a career in education, research or a corporate setting.

If you have noticed mental health symptoms, take a step towards getting relief from a psychologist. The medical professionals will address the symptoms and set you on a path to mental wellness.

Dealing with our grief

My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for nearly a decade. It has been really hard to deal with the stress and guilt of the process, including grieving the babies that we have lost through miscarriages. We have both gone through periods of feeling guilty and responsible for the problems we have had conceiving; although, the doctors have never been able to work out exactly why we haven't been able to have a baby. Counselling has helped us to deal with our grief and has helped us to draw closer through this hard time rather than growing apart.
